An award-winning documentary photographer, researcher and anthropologist, Ally has developed a photographic and ethnographic project called WILD BORN, which focuses on documentation by writing, photography and ethnographic research of childbirth pregnancies, and initiation ceremonies for women living in tribal societies isolated in extreme geographic areas. The project is an intercultural study aimed at studying the socio-cultural and environmental aspects that affect the traditions and practices of pregnancy and childbirth among tribal women living in geographical areas without the intervention of Western medicine.

The study goes far beyond the biological function of birth and argues that attitudes and birth habits are influenced and developed from cultural perspectives. The project, which began in 2011 and is scheduled for completion in 2018, is unique because it has never been documented or researched and is considered a breakthrough in research. The tribes in which the research has been conducted so far are Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Namibia and India. Future tribes in the project are in the Amazon, Africa, Himalayas and Siberia. The diversity is intended to present a wide variety of geographies, from deserts to African savannah, from the rainforest to the poles. The project explores how geographic location and environment shape and influence local beliefs, and how these determine attitudes toward pregnancy and childbirth

Following her unique and groundbreaking work, Ally was invited to be a member of the prestigious explorers and explorers organization EXPLORERS CLUB, located in New York, an organization that promotes scientific research on land, sea and air. The club members are recognized as responsible for initial documented achievements such as the first voyage to the North Pole and more. Ally serves as a judge on a committee of research delegations of the organization. In addition, she has won many awards supporting the continuation of her work. Her work has also been published in international journals such as The New York Times, Huffington Post, Ocean Geographic and more. Her works have been exhibited in galleries around the world.

Topic

Introduction: evolution of the project from where it started in 2011, to where it is today, including a review/mapping of each expedition. Highlighting: Kosua Tribe- Papua New Guinea, Himba Tribe –Namibia, Taut Batu – Palawan Philippines, Nenets- Siberia.

Challenges: remoteness, locating a tribe, and a nine-month pregnant woman, communication.

Pregnancy and birth stories from each tribe: traditional knowledge, traditional midwives, taboos, rituals.

Rite of passage stories: Into womanhood initiation – Himba.

I will focus expensively on my recent research expedition in Siberia amongst the Nenets. This project was awarded by the Scott Pearlman Field Award and as a flag expedition by the Explorers Club.

I joined a Nenets family and a woman in her ninth month of pregnancy on a 60-day journey on a reindeer sled at an extreme temperature of minus 50 degrees, and documented all aspects of birth , and migration with an infant, from it’s preparation state to the final destination at winter camp.
